Visual Aids To Determining the Stage of Baby Bird Development

Nestlings are baby birds with no or not fully developed feathers...these birds should be returned to the nest!

Nestlings

These baby birds do not have fully developed feathers and should be returned to their nest, if at all possible.  If they cannot be returned to the nest follow the instructions on the "Help I Found a Baby Bird" web page and call a wildlife rehabilitator.

Birds Whose Feathers Are Not Fully Developed...They Should Be Put Back In the Nest, If Possible!

Fledglings are baby birds learning to fly...they should be left alone to continue their learning process!

Fledglings

These birds are ready to fledge or begin learning how to fly.  If you see a bird like this hopping around on the ground, please leave it alone and clear pets of the area.  These birds are out of the nest, learning to fly under their parents' supervision.  Although you may not see them, the parents are nearby. This is a natural part of the development process for a baby bird and the birds should be left alone.
